Perfect Red Pout

The Perfect Red Pout

Seen walking the red carpet at the Oscars and more recently on the VAMFF runways, the red lip is beauty’s answer to the Little Black Dress.

A red lip can instantly transform your look, worn with confidence this hue will give your face an instant boost. Out of context red lips pair perfectly with a breton top or grey marle tee and denim and best worn with understated make-up so that your lips are the feature and you don’t look too garish. Red lips are also a fabulous companion to evening wear, adding a simple winged eye and mascara for added drama and a sultry after-dark look.

Red in its various shades, suit everyone. It’s just about finding the right colour red to suit your skin tone. As the rule goes, fairer/rosey skin tones should lean towards true reds and blue based reds, medium skin looks good in warmer, orange-y reds, olive skin can work with most reds whereas darker skin tones should go for darker, berry reds. In all honesty, rules are made to be broken and it’s just about finding the right shade for you and how much of a lip statement you want to make.

Just remember: True or blue-reds will brighten the look of your teeth, as opposed to warmer, orange-y reds.

How to nail this look:

1. Prep your lips.  Prep lips with balm and then wipe a cotton bud over them to get rid of dry skin, let balm set in whilst doing the rest of your face.  No dry lips, please!

2. Application is key.  Wipe away residual lip balm right before application otherwise the colour won’t stick. Apply with a lip brush for more precise execution and longer lasting lip colour. Apply concealer or face powder to the edge of your lip line to stop the colour from bleeding/feathering.
3. Don’t play up your eyes.  Pared back eyes are the trick when wearing red lipstick. Think a sweep of mascara and a neutral eyeshadow – NO coloured eyeshadow as this will clash with your lips.

4. Avoid getting lipstick on your teeth. After applying, put your finger in your mouth, purse your lips around it, then slowly pull it out to remove excess colour. You can also blot with a tissue and reapply to build the colour to ensure it lasts.

5. Wear with confidence!

March Must-Haves

I must admit, despite reluctantly accepting that summer is now over, I have been secretly crossing my fingers for a cold snap so that I can wear my favourite winter jackets. Moreover, it’s the perfect excuse to go shopping for a new wardrobe. Autumn/Winter is undoubtedly every fashionista’s favourite season, to layer up and sport some uber chic style.
Here are my three style tips for right now, and consequently 3 items I have purchased with this month’s pay.

1. Emanate a definite Superwoman aura in a cape blazer

I have been eyeing off the cape blazer for quite some time and after trawling the online realm I found this gem from Nasty Gal. It fits the bill for a polished, minimalist look that works round the clock, taking me effortlessly from desk to dinner. Cape blazers add a contemporary spin to the classic blazer and play well with all your wardrobe staples.

2. Dip a stylish toe into lace up heels this season

Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 10.13.44 pm

Almost tempted to for-go food for 3 months and buy the Aquazurra Belgravia heels (who am I kidding?), pragmatism kicked in and I decided to go in search of a more affordable option. Tony Bianco do a killer lace up heel, but you’re at risk of losing circulation to your toes whilst flaunting said killer 12cm heels. Enter ZU Shoes with their affordable AND comfortable lace up heels – I was sold immediately and they haven’t left my feet since! These shoes pair well with a leather mini or form fitting pencil skirt for equal parts edgy and elegant.

3. Keep the statement in check with an attention-grabbing piece of jewellery.

I stumbled across this Witchery necklace (whilst in search of my aforementioned shoes). It is a great piece to subtly adopt the choker trend this season. Rather than wearing it long, wrap the chain around your neck a few times, tying the ends at the front letting a few inches hang down.

The three pieces together are the perfect marriage of edgy-chic and are great additions to your A/W wardrobe.

Bronzed Goddess

‘Bronzed Goddess’

Don’t let your summer glow fade with your tan lines. The natural healthy glow is one of the most sought after make up looks year round. Sadly, we’ve begun the agonising countdown until summer returns, but it doesn’t mean you can’t maintain a bit of ‘bronzed’ colour throughout the cooler months…

Here is my pick of the crop:

1. By Terry Lumi Serum: Liquid bronze in a bottle, this illuminating serum is perfect for the finishing touch to an already sun-kissed face or mix with your foundation for added colour. Best used as a finish to a dewy complexion and perfect for illuminating the high points of your face that you want to catch the light.

2. Tan Soleil de Chanel  is a cream base bronzer, perfect for contouring and building overall colour. This blendable texture works to define your face by buffing all over with a kabuki brush. It also plays well with your foundation for buildable colour during those tricky transitional months between Winter and Summer foundations.

2. Les Beiges Chanel Healthy Glow Bronzer, my personal favourite, it comes  in 5 shades. Again, this is a matte bronzer which is great for contouring the face or adding a sweep of colour to give an overall bronzed effect. It comes with a half moon brush, which is great for contouring underneath your cheekbones, then use a larger power brush for overall colour. I recommend going a shade darker than your skin tone for a deeper colour.

4. NARS Laguna Bronzer: a cult product amongst beauty bloggers, the NARS bronzer comes in 3 shades, with Laguna being the most popular of the three. This bronzer has a matte finish with a hint of illumination and the olive based tone of the Laguna compact lends itself well to warming up light to medium skin tones. It also doubles as a great contouring powder.

Application tip: when applying a powdered bronzer, start at the side of your forehead, trace a line down past your temples and along the cheekbone and then again along the side of your neck, under the jawbone. I like to think of it as drawing a ‘number 3’ along the side of my face. According to celebrity makeup artist, Lisa Elridge, “buffing and building are the aim as you don’t want to end up with any harsh lines”.

‘Fringe with Benefits’

Hit the right style note this winter with fringed handbags, a nod to the 70s revival trend hitting the runways. This is a great piece to add to your look, subtly adopting the fringe trend without going all out country-western cow boy.
The fringing adds interest to an otherwise ubiquitous leather hobo style bag and is a piece every fashionista must own this season!

Partner with a structured & minimal ensemble (think tonal a la Olivia Palermo) to let the bag do the talking.
Want to play up the 70s vibe? Throw on a peasant style blouse and mini skirt for an added bohemian spirit.

Here is a somewhat, ‘luxe to less’ offering of fringed bags in the market:

Let Your Lace Shine Through

‘Let Your Lace Shine Through’

Right now it’s all about letting your lingerie shine through your outerwear without the tack-factor. T-shirt bras are undoubtedly comfortable and great under your off-duty tees, but it’s time to change it up, ditch the cotton and splurge on some Saturday night sexiness for everyday wear, and there are fewer things sexier than lace.

Lace bralettes are a feminine touch under a low cut muscle tank, or on cooler days, under a sheer shirt or poking out of a wrap sweater.

Beautiful lingerie imbues self confidence and poise. And I believe, your style shouldn’t be reserved for outerwear, go a little crazy and invest in matching silk set or two. Even if it isn’t to be seen it’ll certainly add some refined swagger to your step.

My personal favourites:
